Let us be inspired
”I say, dress to please yourself. Listen to your inner muse and take a chance. Wear something that says, “Here I am!” today” – Iris Apfel.
I always find it fascinating when I see an old lady who is still following fashion trends. Most grandma’s put on something comfortable, colorless and shapeless because they are old and they want their clothes to be practical and that’s it. My own grandma was a stubborn old lady (very sweet though) and no matter how old she was, she insisted on going shopping. ‘I may be old, but I’m not invisible!’ she used to say. She didn’t really follow fashion trends but she always wanted to look chic, and I loved that about her.
Iris Apfel is taking ‘grandma-fashion’ to the next level. Her outfits are crazy, really on trend and over the top, but she always looks incredible! I can’t help but smiling when I see a picture of her latest fashion outbursts.
If you don’t know who Iris Apfel is, here is some little background information: Apfel is an American business woman and interior designer. She goes to all the fashion party’s and her outfits reach all the magazines. The lady turns 93 this august! (Elle, 2014)
Images of Apfel inspire me because she shows the world that no matter how old you are, if you find a piece of clothing that you like, you can wear it. It’s nonsense to only dress up for a special occasion and the world would be less boring if people would just wear anything they feel like. Get out of your comfort zone!
Before we move on to some more inspiration, here are three classic Iris Apfel outfits!
Enough about Apfel. It’s time for the second image that I find inspiring. This is a GIF I found on wired.com. It shows a fabric that changes color when you touch it.
The textile is called ‘chromosomic’ and is designed by Judit Eszter Karpati, from Hungary. Because of a temperature-sensitive dye the fabric responses to touch and sound. For my study I read a book called ‘fashion futures’ in which they mention all kinds of inventions with technology and fabrics. Since then I find news like this really interesting. Where will inventions like this lead us? What kind of clothes will we be wearing in 2025? One piece of clothing will be changeable to every mood and season when fabrics like this really hit the market. I can’t wait!
